Last year one of the big components to help Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare sell across home consoles and PC was the inclusion of a remastered edition of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Well, it looks like it might be available soon as a standalone purchase in stores.
Call of Duty fansite Charlie Intel was sent a tip from someone at a Target store who spotted a physical copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered for the PlayStation 4.
The packaged game was wrapped in plastic and on the shelf. Apparently it was out earlier than what the computers had indicated, which revealed that the game was supposedly scheduled for release on June 27th, which is next Tuesday. Previously Charlie Intel had received tips that the remastered edition of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare would be available starting June 20th. However, there have been no announcements from Activision about a standalone pack being made available for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered.
If the game really is coming next Tuesday, it would definitely seem like Activision would have let the world know by now... right?
I mean, there is the possibility that someone printed out the cover, plastered it onto a PS4 box, snapped a photo with their phone and sent it in to Charlie Intel. It's not like we haven't seen extremely elaborate hoaxes before. Let's not forget someone made a fully physical featured mock-up of the Nintendo Switch (back when it was known as the Nintendo NX) and used a 3D printer to make a version of the handheld based on the trademark filing. Some people will go to extreme lengths to troll the gaming community.
The only thing that sort of makes this story seem legitimate is that there is a shot of the store shelf that has a listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered for $39.99. It's not impossible for someone to make up a sticker label and plaster it on a Target shelf, but that kind of seems pretty risky and actually runs the risk of them getting into severe trouble just to troll.
For me the most shocking thing is that Activision is only selling the remastered edition for $39.99 and not $59.99. Previously, you could only get your hands on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered by purchasing the $79.99 deluxe edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
There was a large enough contingent of the gaming community who actually chucked out $79.99 for Infinite Warfare just to get their hands on the remastered version of Call of Duty 4. Many more gamers were peeved that Activision wouldn't sell the game separately, but it seemed like a tactical marketing maneuver to compensate for the fact that a lot of gamers had said they weren't purchasing Infinite Warfare.
If Activision does happen to sell the remastered first-person military shooter separately, then it could give it an extra revenue boost during the slow summer months. I guess we'll find out if the game really is making a physical run on retail shelves when June 27th arrives next week.
