BMW announces X5 and X6 M Black Fire Editions
BMW has revealed a mean looking, black themed version of its seriously quick X5 and X6 M SUVs.
Dubbed the Black Fire Edition, the pair will be available overseas from August. BMW Australia says the duo aren’t confirmed for local release but the local arm is keen for their arrival.
A spokesman said it was currently working on where they would fit in the local line-up and would confirm availability soon.
With both having the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 found in the normal X5 and X6 M, the cars aren’t mechanically different.
However, BMW says the Black Fire Edition “visualises all the strengths of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.”
On the outside, this means Black Sapphire paint, black M kidney grille with black bars, black 21-inch wheels and carbon wing mirror caps.
The interior also gets the treatment, with black and red Merino leather, Black Fire logo and an M Performance Alcantara steering wheel with a leather motorsport accent in... light blue.

Holden tests next-gen V6 supercar engine

Red Bull Racing confirms successful first outing for future racing powerplant.

Holden has taken its first step into the future of Supercar racing.
The Red Bull Holden Racing Team has confirmed it successfully tested the next-generation twin-turbo V6 powerplant in a private shakedown test at Queensland's Norwell Motorplex this week.
Supercar stars, Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and Steven Richards, drove the team's promotional Sandman supercar fitted with the first twin-turbo V6 engine this week, with the team reporting it exceeded initial expectations.
"We are very happy with the initial running, GM Racing has given us a great base to work from," Red Bull Racing boss Roland Dane said in a statement.

"The test has been about getting kilometres on the engine and understanding what it needs at this point to prepare it for racing in Supercars."

The team intends to introduce the Gen2 engine with a staggered program next year, with the three main drivers - Lowndes, Whincup and Shane Van Gisbergen - continuing to use today's 5.0-litre V8 engines in their new-generation Commodore racers while a fourth car with a yet-to-be-announced driver will debut the V6 in a series of wild card entries to assess and develop its potential in the racing arena before a full-scale introduction in 2018.
The V6 engine will be unique to Holden in Supercars, and the first time a turbo charged engine has been used in top-level Australian touring car racing since the technology was outlawed in 1993 when the series reverted to a Ford versus Holden competition.
It will also be exclusive to the racing environment, as the next-generation road-going Commodore that is set to arrive in local showrooms early next year will be offered with a naturally-aspirated V6 in top-spec variants and a four-cylinder turbo in lower-grade models. The race cars will also retain a rear-wheel drive configuration whereas the road cars will have either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive transmissions.

Jaguar set to come out with SUV
JOHANNESBURG – It was but less than a decade ago when Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director of Design, said he could not imagine himself designing an SUV. Now here we are, at the cusp of a second Jaguar SUV.

The new E-PACE will be unveiled to the public for the first time on the 13th of July. It will be joined in 2018 by the i-PACE, an all-electric crossover that goes on sale in 2018.

“The combination of sports car looks with Jaguar performance will ensure that the E-PACE stands out,” said Callum. “Every Jaguar is designed to excite the senses, and we think E-PACE will do just that, albeit with its own individual character.” In terms of size, the E-PACE is smaller than the F-PACE, meaning it’s about the same size as cousin Range Rover Evoque.

As such, it will sport several common engines, including the new Ingenium motors, petrol and diesel, producing anything between 140kW and 220kW.

2018 Range Rover Velar gets 300-hp 2.0L turbo
Land Rover has yet to release the 2018 Range Rover Velar, but Land Rover has announced that it is the latest model in the Jaguar Land Rover family to get the new turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder.

The 2.0L four-cylinder is from the Ingenium family and is also available in the Jaguar XE, XF and F-Pace models. The 2.0L engine features a twin scroll turbo with ceramic ball bearings to reduce friction and a high flow compressor wheel. It generates 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque, which gives the Velar a 0-60 mph time of 5.7

If you missed all the news earlier this year, the Range Rover Velar will slot in the Range Rover lineup between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport. It shares its platform with the Jaguar F-Pace and will rival other luxury crossovers, like the Porsche Macan.

The 2018 Range Rover Velar is expected to arrive this summer and pricing starts at $50,895.

Rory MacDonald threw a bucket of cold water on Bellator’s welterweight title fight Saturday night, just seconds after it happened. [ads-post] The top 170-pound fighter, who should be in line for a title fight next, slammed the performances of Douglas Lima and Lorenz Larkin at Bellator NYC at Madison Square Garden. Lima ended up winning a unanimous decision against the very tough UFC veteran. But MacDonald wanted to see more.
Rory MacDonaldI was really underwhelmed,” MacDonald said on the broadcast. “I was expecting a good fight. I had a lot of excitement going into this fight. Larkin is an excellent fighter. If these guys think they’re keeping a belt fighting like that against me, it’s not gonna happen. I’m gonna take these guys out. They’re just gonna be another body in the grave.”

After the win, Lima told MacDonald to “come get it” and said that MacDonald has been in tough fights in the past, but won’t know a real tough fight until he steps in the cage with him.
“The Red King” is likely to get that shot against Lima, one of Bellator’s best fighters historically, sometime in the fall. MacDonald, 27, won his Bellator debut against Paul Daley by second-round submission in May. The Canadian owns wins over current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, as well as Nate Diaz, BJ Penn and Demian Maia.
Speaking to Mike Goldberg and Josh Thomson on the desk, MacDonald explained that he’s done fighting cautiously and wants to let his true ability come out.
“This is the next chapter in my career,” MacDonald said. “I’m not playing games anymore. i’m coming forward, I’m doing my style now. I’m not playing games. I’m not point fighting anymore. I’m there to take you out. I’m hunting you down, and I’m gonna bury you and that’s it.”
MacDonald (19-4) came close to beating Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 in 2015, a fight that many believe is one of the best in UFC history. MacDonald lost his next bout to Stephen Thompson and then departed the UFC as a free agent for Bellator.
Now, he is angling for that promotion’s welterweight title. And he believes it could be around his waist soon if Lima fights the way he did Saturday night.
“That was not up to par, that’s for sure,” MacDonald said.

After belting two premium SUVs back to back, it was now time to get back to the sedan scheme of things. Welcoming the change was the new 2017 Skoda Octavia. A car that has been bridging the gap between value and luxury for a long time now. And as we found out, with a new face, it still manages to do that exceedingly well and offers truckloads of premium, without the need for you to break the bank and go all-out German.
To top it all, brand Skoda has been investing a lot of time, efforts and money to reach out to their customers. Proof? They are now offering a 4-year/100,000 km warranty, a 4-year on-the-go, 24/7 assistance program, and a 4-year/60,000 km maintenance package that entails to four periodic maintenance services at an interval of 15,000 km or one year, for Rs. 39,999. They’ve made earnest efforts to transform the dealership and after sales experience, have made billing more transparent, and there’s now a MySkoda App which maintains your car’s service history, has an inbuilt service cost calculator and lets you book a service too. Back to the car in question now.

Three engine choices are on offer – a 1.4 and a 1.8-litre TSI petrol, where the former is paired to a 6-speed manual, while the latter is conjoined to a brilliant 7-speed DSG. The 2.0-litre TDI can be had either with a 6-speed manual or a DSG with as many ratios. Our experience began with the explosive 1.8-litre petrol which we managed to spank around for a brief duration on the outskirts of Chandigarh.

For numbers, the 1.8 TSI develops 180 PS of power between 5100 – 6200 rpm and 250 Nm of twist between 1250 – 5000 clicks. Power delivery is immediate, where that intelligent and blazingly fast gearbox harnesses all the goodness and throws it at those front wheels with amazing immediacy. At part throttle, the gearbox keeps cycling between cogs with such smoothness and linearity, none of the shift points can be perceived.

But the magic that engine and gearbox combo entertains with is best enjoyed through the switches behind the wheel. Smashed acceleration invites some amount of wheelspin, even for a car that has been civilised by several electronic assist features. But then keep at it and the engine will rev cleanly till about six and a half, filling the cabin with a note that is seriously sweet. Things get even more melodious when you tackle a series of bends and run down the box as it blips out some more sweetness.

The 1.8 motor scoops out heavy quantities of goodness for your right foot to lick it clean. Also, makes the new Octavia attain serious speeds in quick time. Backed by an intelligent gearbox which also lets you have some fun, this petrol motor makes the Octavia an engaging and rewarding car to drive. And then they told us they’ve lined up a tastier VRs variant which will be launched this year itself.

Although rated for an official figure of 15.1 kpl, you’d be nowhere close to that number if you exploit all the 180 PS of goodness from that 1.8 TSI motor at will, which you will. So if you’re after the niceties the new Skoda Octavia has to offer and want it paired to an efficient, yet competent drivetrain, the 2.0-litre TDI is the motor to opt for. You may pick between a 6-speed manual or a DSG box, rated for 21 kpl and 19.5 kpl respectively.

As is the case with most modern turbocharged diesels, there is a hint of lag before all of that 320 Nm of twist, spread out between 1750 – 3000 rpm kicks in. However, driveability is aided greatly by the intelligent gearbox which is quick to understand the position of your foot and then skillfully masks the initial vacuum. A noticeable surge in power starts to kick in around the 1,600 rpm mark and from there on, the engine is always in a healthy state of tune. We couldn’t really push it too much, taking into account the urban environs we drove the car in. However, it settles into a lazy cruise, the engine spinning at 1,900 rpm in 6th gear at an indicated 100 kph. What we could not grow fond of though is the drone from the diesel engine, which is always apparent inside the cabin unless you’re feathering the throttle and cruising at comfortable speeds.

The new Skoda Octavia’s ride has a well-damped feeling to its firmness. Skoda has kicked out the rear wheels to make the track wider, which now results in enhanced straight line stability. On the move, the Octavia’s typically European roots are very evident as it makes its way forward with unshakeable composure. High-speed manners are praiseworthy, although the modern steering system won’t offer any feels. It is agile and will precisely place the wheels where you want them to be though. Around bends, there is a tiny amount of roll which creeps in, but for a family sedan, the Octavia gets around really well. Brakes do a fine job of hauling the car down from high speeds, keeping things tidy and in line.

The face-lifted Skoda Octavia feels rich and premium inside, where the addition of a host of new features have brought it up to speed with current market demands. An electronically adjustable driver’s seat gets two memory buttons, along with adjustable lumbar support. One their own, those front chairs are supportive and really comfortable once you’re settled in.

A perfectly round steering wheel has these nice soft touch buttons which operate a crisp looking MID screen that will display all the information you want while on the move. We particularly like how a single dial on the left-hand side also acts as a button and makes navigating through various menus such an easy affair.

The highlight inside is a new 8.0″ touchscreen infotainment system, which has ditched all of its buttons completely in favour of touch sensitive switches. You still get two dials though, one for volume, the other to scroll around. We like. The screen operates with amazing smoothness and looks crisp. There is almost no lag between your touch and the desired action, which speaks highly of the quality of that unit. Audio output too is great, with most of the details coming out crisp and distortion free even at high volume levels.

There’s an inbuilt Amundsen navigation system which works pretty well. But in addition to that, the new infotainment system is also CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirrorlink compatible. A neat new feature is a BossConnect app which can be installed on any of the passenger’s phone and it will then let them control the infotainment system through it.

The facelifted Skoda Octavia continues with its notchback identity which still makes it stand out in a crowd of new age cuts, slashes and identical faces. And that last part is exactly where the new car looks very different than the earlier example. It now features a split headlight which has resulted in mixed opinions about the way it looks. But let me tell you something, it looks distinctly mean to me, and personally, I like it. Has managed to break away from the boring family look scheme of things and the visual monotony associated with most products these days.

In a segment which is slowly shrinking because of changing tastes and a heavy appetite for SUVs, the 2017 Octavia stays true to Skoda’s positioning as a brand which offers a lot of premium, for a lot less. It is packed with features, is well built, feels rich, drives really well, and unless you need a premium entry level sedan just for that German monogram which will sit pretty in your garage, this one’s a no-brainer if you ask us.

Skoda has plans to launch the 7-seater Kodiaq in India this year, along with the Octavia VRs and an all-new product which they’re tight lipped about. Maybe the Karoq? Could it be the new Fabia? Well, we could only guess as we admired the quietly brilliant Yeti which was deployed as our support car.

Jaguar Land Rover has given the public a first glimpse of how close it is to developing truly autonomous cars. When reporting on carmakers making the biggest strides towards the ultimate aim of building vehicles with full autonomy, they're usually Mercedes, BMW, Volvo and Tesla.

However, at a special testing ground this week Jaguar Land Rover offered the first public demonstrations of a car it's been developing that already has Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities.

Jaguar Land Rover Displays Its Autonomous Technology Prowess

According to the Society of Automotive Engineers' scale, there are five steps or levels of autonomy with one being a single function, such as cruise control, and five being a car capable of driving itself without any input from a human driver, regardless of road situation.

Level Four is defined as a full autonomous operation of all driving functions in specific scenarios. And on a specially created urban environment set up on a test track a technologically adapted Range Rover Sport demonstrated how it can obey traffic lights, negotiate junctions, roundabouts and other typical inner city road situations.

"Our Autonomous Urban Drive research is Jaguar Land Rover's next step in our development of both fully and semi-autonomous vehicle technologies," said Tony Harper, Director of Engineering Research, Jaguar Land Rover.

And as impressive as it is to see a car negotiating a closed inner city environment, coping in the real world is different entirely. That's why prototypes will be hitting the roads of the UK later this year to undergo real-world testing, initially on closed sections of road but then in proper traffic situations.

The ultimate aim is to bring this level of autonomy to production Land Rovers and Jaguars within the next decade, but in a way that complements rather than takes over the driving.

"We aren't looking at simply replacing the driver, and making cars ‘driverless'. Future technologies will give the driver more not less -- they will assist and ultimately enhance the driving experience," said Harper.

THIS is the sporty top model of Skoda’s best-selling Octavia range, which is the most powerful to date. The Octavia vRS 245 will be on the road in late July.
It comes as a hatchback or estate and is fitted with a 2.0 TSI engine that produces 245PS, giving the hatch version a sprint time from 0-62mph in just 6.6 seconds, 6.7 seconds for the estate.
It is the most powerful Octavia in the Czech company’s history and also comes with many exterior and interior features and details to emphasise its sporty nature. The four-cylinder TSI petrol engine in the new Octavia vRS develops 15PS more than the current vRS engine. Maximum power is on stream from 1600 to 4300 rpm.
Skoda Octavia vRS 245 is a hot summer arrival
There is a choice of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG gearbox and its top speed is limited to 155mph. Fuel consumption is claimed at 44.1mpg for the DSG model, with emissions of 148g/km.
As far as looks go, the vRS 245 has the Skoda brand’s new nose, with the radiator grille’s vertical slats and frame in gloss black. The Octavia vRS has a predominantly black interior, with Alcantara sports seats fitted with integrated headrests. The driver’s seat has electrically adjustable, lumbar support, and memory function for up to three people.
The car also offers a multi-function sports steering wheel with integrated steering wheel paddles on the DSG. A heated wheel is optional.
Driving and safety aids include predictive pedestrian protection, blind spot detect, rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, driver alert fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition, automated parking, hill-hold control and an auto high beam system for the headlights. There’s also a lap timer contained in the instrument cluster.
Skoda “Simply Clever” features include a bottle holder in the centre console for one-handed opening of bottles, two USB ports in the rear of the car and a wireless phone charging pad in the centre console.
Exclusively for the estate, there is a removable LED torch in the boot, an adjustable boot floor, multi-functional shelf under the boot cover, a boot barrier net, four bag hooks, two lights and a 12-volt socket in the cargo area. Prices run from £27,595 for the hatchback and £28,795 for the estate.

Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Prototype Sounds Vicious at the 'Ring
Back in November, AMG head Tobias Moers confirmed his division is developing a hardcore Black Series variant of the brand's flagship AMG GT, due out sometime in 2018. Now, thanks to this latest spy video from the Nurburgring, we finally get to see the GT Black Series in action.

Currently, the most track-ready AMG GT you can buy is the extremely capable AMG GT R. With fixed aero pieces, a carbon fiber roof, and 577 horsepower, you'd think the R is more than enough to represent the performance sub-brand. But AMG hasn't stopped there.

Everything We Know About the New Bronco and Ranger
Taken during an industry test session at the 'Ring, reveals what looks to be the upcoming AMG GT Black Series. If you're familiar with the Black Series nameplate, you'll know the title is reserved for only the most extreme Mercedes variants.

This car seems to fit the part well, with a huge rear wing, gigantic intakes, and some serious aero up front. Though we're not sure how much power the Black Series will make, expect it to be more than the 577 hp in the GT R. Watch for yourself as it tears up the 'Ring.

Chevrolet Teases Camaro ZL1 1LE Nurburgring Lap Record
We'll soon find out how fast the Camaro ZL1 1LE ripped up the Nurburgring.
Nurburgring lap times represent the ultimate bragging rights for automakers. Back in April, the track-focused Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE was spotted attempting a new lap record at the Green Hell, and now Chevrolet has posted a teaser video on Facebook hinting that its lap time will finally be revealed very soon. Given the anticipation the automaker is trying to generate, chances are the ZL1 1LE has set a new lap record. It will have to beat the blistering time set by the stock Camaro ZL1, which ripped up the Ring in 7 minutes and 29.6 seconds.

This was three seconds faster than the Mustang Shelby GT350R, and we fully expect the ZL1 1LE to beat that time by several seconds. Like the ZL1, the Camaro ZL1 1LE is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that produces 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, but it’s been fitted with a raft of upgrades to help it tear up the track. Compared to the standard Camaro ZL1, the ZL1 1LE is 60 pounds lighter and has an adjustable ride height, as well as Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve dampers. Aero upgrades include a massive carbon fiber rear wing, and it also boasts a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires developed exclusively for the ZL1 1LE.

The trailer proudly states that “the time has come,” but no clues of the lap time or a reveal date were mentioned. Hopefully we’ll find out if the ZL1 1LE lives up to its title as “the most track-capable Camaro ever” in a matter of days. The track-focused muscle car will be screeching into dealerships this summer, though Rick Hendrick has already

Polestar breaks away from Volvo

Swedish car maker creates stand-alone electrified performance brand.

Meet the newest player in the world of performance cars - Polestar.
Swedish brand Volvo has announced its high-performance division will stand apart from its mainstream models. Instead, Polestar will offer electrified performance variants of Volvo's models wearing a unique badge.
Polestar was originally set-up as an partner to Volvo for its racing programs before eventually establishing a tuning division which produced upgrades for the S60, V60, XC60 and XC90. Volvo acquired the brand in 2015 and took production of the performance models in-house.
Now it has appointed Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president of design and the man credited with the brand's current styling, as chief executive officer of Polestar to oversee its separation.
"Thomas heading up the Polestar organisation shows our commitment to establishing a truly differentiated stand-alone brand within the Volvo Car Group," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars.
How much freedom Ingenlath and his team have to create its new models remains unclear but his background in design suggests there should be significant visual differences between a Volvo and Polestar model.
What is clear is that future Polestar models will rely on electrification, initially hybrids and ultimately fully electric powertrains.
"Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars," Samuelsson said. "With Polestar, we are able to offer electrified cars to the world's most demanding, progressive drivers in all market segments."
The decision to offer hybrid powertrains is in keeping with Volvo's push into the electric vehicle market. The company confirmed in April that its first full EV model will launch in 2019.
Polestar has been working on performance hybrid powertrains since before Volvo's takeover and is believed to have a tuned version of the brand's T8 engine. The turbo and supercharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid is already capable of producing 235kW of power plus a 65kW boost from the electric motor.
But while Polestar will offer stand-alone models the announcement also confirmed that it will continue to sell "optimisation" packages for the rest of the Volvo range, as it does today.
More details of Polestar's plans are expected to be revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show in September.

We're Finally Getting The Mercedes-Benz A-Class: Report
As Americans, we’re obsessed with the forbidden fruit of cars we don’t get here, like the Audi A1 and the BMW 1 Series. But now there’s word that Mercedes-Benz could be bringing the spunky little A-Class stateside.

According to Automotive News, which cites unnamed Mercedes sources at a dealers’ meeting in Miami, we can expect the A-Class to finally hit our shores at around September of next year. The car would slot beneath Mercedes’ current lowest offering, the CLA, which starts at $32,700.

When emailed for confirmation of the A-Class and if we could expect an A45 AMG as well, a Mercedes spokesperson declined to comment.

While a new downmarket premium offering is always exciting for us, it’s always funny to me how cool they are over here and how boring and ubiquitous they are in Europe. The European A-Class is basically just a little econobox, nothing terribly exciting.

Which makes me hope that the A-Class that comes here will be different than the ones in Europe. Otherwise, how will Mercedes justify people buying it over a Hyundai Accent? Brand snobbery?

2017 Hyundai Verna teased ahead of India launch expected in August
Hyundai Motor India Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Korean carmaker Hyundai, has teased an image of India-spec new Verna sedan ahead of its rumoured launch in August.

Hyundai globally unveiled the new generation of Verna at Chengdu Motor Show in China in September 2016. Subsequently, the Russian-spec version named Solaris and Canada-spec version christened Accent were unveiled in February. India-spec version will also carry country specific subtle changes.

The teaser image faces of the car that comes with more pronouncing hexagonal grille and swept-back headlamps with integrated daytime running lamps. The international version already gives us a clear picture of how the new sedan will look like in India.

The large hexagonal grille will get chrome finish. The design of front bumper and fog lamps are similar to Elite i20. At the rear, the position of the registration plate will see a change in position from boot to bumper. The new tail lamps will be wide and thin compared to the current model.

The new Verna will get a 10mm increase in wheelbase and hence overall length will rise by 15mm. Width of the car will go up by 29mm. This also indicates new Verna will be roomier than current version. Interestingly, the increased dimensions will not add weight. In fact the new Verna will be lighter by 10 kg over the outgoing model.

The interior of the Verna sedan will be updated with features such as a new infotainment system, automatic climate control and many more. In its new avatar, the cabin is likely to get all-black upholstery. The layout has been inspired by the Verna's bigger sibling Elantra.
2017 Verna is likely to carry over the same engines from the current model. The Verna is powered by a 1.4-litre diesel and petrol engines, and 1.6-litre diesel and petrol engines. The 1.4-litre petrol engine develops 104bhp torque while the 1.6-litre petrol version will churn out 121bhp. The 1.4-litre diesel produces 89bhp, while the 1.6-litre diesel will belt out 127bhp of power.

Hyundai India is expected to start booking for the new Verna from July and the sedan will compete against the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento in India.

2017 Skoda Octavia facelift first drive review
Skoda has been quietly working for the last three years to improve their image in India. In the last few years, their reputation took a massive beating on the back of a shoddy after sales service network. Things however are looking up, slowly but steadily. Skoda India claims that systems are more transparent and the company is quick to respond to customer service requirements. New features in the entire customer service chain are bringing customers back to Skoda.

The next step obviously is to bring newer offerings that will strengthen the brand and customer confidence. So over the last few months we have seen newer versions of the Superb and the Rapid being introduced and now Skoda is introducing a fresher Octavia. This also paves the way for the forthcoming Kodiaq and the Octavia RS expected in the market in the month of September. For now our attentions are focused on the Octavia, here is what is new and what it does for you.

The revised Octavia has several design and styling flourishes that freshen the car. The changes however are subtle, so subtle in fact that they failed to elicit much response from passerby’s. Save for a few enthusiasts in Chandigarh who spotted some of the changes and sped up in their cars to take a closer look at this new Octavia, the general populace remained oblivious.

The front end sports the most detail changes overall. The headlamps have been split into smaller components hosing the low and high beam in separate pods. The lamps son the far extremities are for the low beams, while the inner pods are the high beams. Under them on the bumper are the driving lamps. All the lighting elements are LED, and this has led to smarter and more effective illumination and a reduction in energy consumption. Another result is that emissions have dropped by roughly 1 gram per kilometer which may not seem like such a big deal here in India, but trust me, its important in the long run.

The headlights are also adaptive which means they sense the illumination required and adjust the brightness and spread accordingly. The grille has a black mirror finish, the lower bumper has a chrome strip running across the length of it and there are subtle contours added to the hood that weren’t found on the previous generation car. These contour changes have also come about since the track and subsequently the width of the car has increased, a change that also results in additional sculpting to the fenders. Does the Octavia look any nicer than before, yes it does! There is a more premium look and feel and all the brightwork enhances the upmarket proposition the Octavia offers. Even at the rear the LED tail lamp array appears more plush and contemporary.

Step into the Octavia to a significantly better cabin than before. The changes are more apparent here than on the exteriors. The two tone upholstery scheme continues but the colours have altered miutely. The beige and black theme continues and it could probably be because it’s a new car, but the Octavia interiors look brighter. The door pads have plastic inserts whose appearance emulates brushed aluminum and it’s a nice touch, giving the cabin a very premium and suave appeal.

The fascia on the centre console has changed, a new touchscreen using capacitive touch like what you see on cell phones is employed. Set within a smooth black bezel it looks premium and functions immaculately. Lower down, the air con controls are also new, shiny and employ some clever stylized bits. Overall the dashboard is laid out and bedecked very smartly and it would be nice to see these design cues being carried forward onto future models as well.

There aren’t any significant mechanical changes, the Octavia continues to use the proven and familiar engine options utilized in the previous generation car. There are two petrol options, the 1.4-litre and the 1.8-litre direct injection turbocharged engines. The 1.4-litre engine with a 150PS power output and 250Nm of torque is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission. The more powerful and brilliant 1.8 TSI engine delivers 180PS of max power and 250Nm of torque through an automatic 7-speed DSG transmission that also uses paddle shifts for a more manual shift experience. This engine is absolutely delightful, max torque is at a peak from as low as 1250rpm and is available all the way to 5000rpm. This guarantees a superb driving experience, especially in a car that weighs just 1376 kilos. This ultimately leads to a power to weight ratio of 131PS per ton! Power delivery is scintillating and it takes just seconds to get into triple digit speeds. Now we haven’t tested this particular engine but I’d wager it does a 100kmph in under 7 seconds. The transmission has also improved, its more refined and shifts are much quicker leading to better performance and honestly, I couldn’t care about efficiency in this variant! If you want more miles per litre in a petrol the 1.4 engine option is what you’re looking for.

On the diesel front, the Volkswagen groups 2.0-litre turbodiesel (EA288) also continues its service. It is complemented by either a 6-speed manual or DSG automatic transmission options. The former delivers a claimed efficiency of 21kmpl while the latter delivers 19.5kmpl.

On the suspension front, things continue to stay quite the same. Though as I mentioned before the rear track has increased. This means you get more stability especially at high speeds. Rear track has increased by 30mm on the 1.8TSI variant since it employs a multilink axle. On the 2.0-litre diesel rear track has increased by 20mm to accommodate the compound link crank axle. The 1.8TSI that I drove felt composed, though there is mild body roll evident when you’re driving in urban conditions. Out on the highways as your speeds rise the Octavia settles down and is more planted and firm.

The new Octavia adds a ton of features to its equipment list. Key additions are the larger touchscreen that I mentioned earlier, you get carplay, android auto and even mirror link through that touchscreen, you also get handsfree parking which employs 12 sensors to allow the Octavia to perpendicular or parallel park itself. Another interesting feature especially for those who would prefer to be driven is a feature called the Boss Connect. It allows the rear seat passengers to control the audio and navigation using a native app from your smartphone. Rear passengers also get 2 fast charging points in addition to air-con vents though you can’t control blower speeds or temperature on these. And lets not forget the ost important one of them all, a panoramic sunroof!

On the more critical safety front the Octavia offers 8 airbags on the Style and Style Plus variant, though the base Ambition variant gets both dual front and side airbags as well. The Octavia also gets a hill hold function and a feature called multi collision braking that continues applying the brakes on a car in the event of a collision that incapacitates the driver and makes him lose control. It enables the car to prevent crashing into further objects reducing the impact of an accident.

Overall the new Octavia is a much better car on every front. Sadly, the segment itself is seeing a decline and the space for premium sedans such as the Octavia is diminishing. Still the second largest selling sedan in its segment soldiers on and now provides even better value. As for the price differential, I expect Skoda to charge a small premium considering the plethora of features on offer. If Skoda continues to back this up with renewed vigor, transparency and honesty where their after sales relationships are concerned, the new Octavia can make a stronger comeback than ever before!

Volvo Seeks to Continue Its Stateside Resurgence With The Redesigned XC60 Midsize Crossover
The recent redesign of Volvo’s large XC90 sport utility vehicle catapulted the Swedish brand to the forefront of the luxury market, as its longstanding bestseller – the smaller XC60 crossover – humbly underpinned the automaker.

Now, after nine years on the market and more than 1 million in global sales, the XC60 will get its day in the sun when the crossover's next generation hits showrooms in August.

The XC60, the bestselling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe, is the first of Volvo’s 60 series cars to get a wholesale upgrade in a bid to boost the automaker’s profile in the U.S., where the smaller crossover plays No. 2 to the XC90.

Starting at $42,495, the XC60 is the least expensive of Volvo’s redesigned models, and according to Volvo executives, intended for young families and empty nesters. The smaller crossover, which composes one-third of Volvo’s global sales, is also the most dynamic on the road. The next-generation, all-wheel drive XC60 occupies a smaller footprint – it’s 4.7 inches shorter and 280 pounds lighter than the outgoing model – and flaunts a sculpted, more athletic body. The T5 base model gets a 250-horsepower turbocharged engine, while the T6 runs on a 316-horsepower turbo- and supercharged engine. The T8 plug-in electric hybrid delivers 400 horsepower using a 10.4-kilowatt battery and a pair of electric motors.

However, the crossover’s interior impresses more than its handling, sporting a plush cabin centered on a 9-inch touchscreen that works even with a gloved touch (especially useful for long Swedish winters). Buyers can upgrade to Nappa leather upholstery and open-pore driftwood inlays, a 12.3-inch display screen with navigation, and a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Volvo’s commitment to its public goal to eliminate deaths and serious injuries in a new Volvo by 2020 means that the new XC60 has the most advanced package of standard safety features in the brand’s lineup. In particular, the new crossover introduces steering assistance, which supports the vehicle’s newest and most advanced safety capabilities by working to steer the XC60 away from collisions with vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians, and large animals. The XC60’s oncoming lane mitigation system uses steering assist to prevent accidents with oncoming vehicles if the car crosses the lane divider at speeds between 37 and 87 m.p.h. The optional Blind Spot Indication system uses steer assist to return the XC60 to its lane if it detects a potential collision when the vehicle changes lanes.
